Happy birthday, Mr. Poe

January 19, 2009

Poe-sted by Nick Sarno

Edgar Allen Poe is 200 years old today! His birthday reminded of an episode of Antiques Roadshow I saw a few years back in which a woman brought in the daguerreotype above to be appraised. Since it was one of the only images of Poe, and the first known photograph of any major American literary figure, the little picture she paid $98 for turned out to be worth somewhere around $40,000.

I thought that was the end of it, but after looking it up, it turns out there was more to the story than that. Shortly after the broadcast, the owner of the photograph was contacted by the FBI and, well, the story gets more complicated from there. Read the whole thing here, and let’s celebrate by dismembering our neighbors and hiding the corpses under the floorboards of our apartments.
