Happy 1000th birthday, Genji!

The other day I mentioned that I’m currently reading The Tale of Genji. I hadn’t realized it when I cracked the spine, but Kyoto is currently celebrating the 1000th anniversary of Lady Murasaki’s novel. Which, in a way, means that the entire world is celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the novel. Happy birthday, novel!

The New York Times has an article about the celebration, as well as a little slideshow here. Unfortunately, an image of the “Murasaki robot” created by inventors at Kyoto University has not been included. But that one is probably best left to my imagination, anyway.
